Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel (19 August 1883 – 10 January 1971) was a French fashion designer and businesswoman. She was the founder and namesake of the Chanel brand. Along with Paul Poiret, Chanel was credited in the post-World War I era with liberating women from the constraints of the "corseted silhouette" and popularizing a sporty, casual chic as the feminine standard of style. A prolific fashion creator, Chanel extended her influence beyond couture clothing, realising her design aesthetic in jewelleryhandbags, and fragrance. Her signature scent, Chanel No. 5, has become an iconic product. She is the only fashion designer listed on TIME magazine's list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Chanel designed her iconic interlocked-CC monogram, meaning Coco Chanel, using it since the 1920s.
Chanel was known for her lifelong determination, ambition, and energy which she applied to her professional and social life. She both achieved financial success as a businesswoman and catapulted to social prominence in French high society, thanks to the connections she made through her work. These included many artists and craftspeople to whom she became a patron.
Chanel's fashion impacted the role that women had in the society; it gave women a place in the community because they were no longer viewed as pretty little things that couldn't do anything, but they were now being accepted into the work society. Coco Chanel said, "One world was dying, another coming into existence. I was there an opportunity beckoned and I took it. I was the same age as the new century, so it turned me for its expression in clothing."  People had only thought that Chanel was a "revolutionaire" in the fashion world. She also impacted society due to the fact that she broadened the fashion that was available to women which gave them more opportunities. For example when pants were created for women they could ride horses freely and not just have to sit sideways and fear falling off. She set examples and took a bold leap branching out of the norm. "If I cut my hair, others did. If I shortened my dresses, so did everyone else." People followed her trends.
